Vrancea Land - The Land of Cheese Puppeteers

Explore Vrancea Land, a unique region in eastern Romania, where the Eastern Carpathians meet the Subcarpathians of Vrancea, creating a natural landscape of impressive beauty. This area, with its rich cultural heritage and ancestral traditions, is home to the legend of Baba Vrâncioaia, a symbol of the courage and resilience of the people of Vrancea. Her story, passed down from generation to generation, reflects the indomitable spirit of the local community.

Vrancea Land is also a vital center for traditional crafts. One of the most remarkable crafts is the making of cheese puppets. These artistic sculptures are used in the traditional process of drying and smoking cheese. The cheese puppet is made of maple wood, chosen for its strength and unique qualities. Each puppet is hand-carved by local craftsmen, such as Pavel Lupașc from Nereju, who continue this centuries-old art.

The cheese puppet is not only a useful tool but also a symbol of Vrancea's tradition and identity. In the past, it was also used in the marriage proposal process, representing a profound commitment between families. Today, the cheese puppet also serves as a decorative element, bringing the beauty of tradition into people's homes.

The preparation of smoked cheese is a process that begins with the careful selection of fresh milk. The milk is heated, and rennet is added to coagulate it. The formed cheese is cut, scalded, and placed in molds to give it the desired shape. After this, the cheese is immersed in brine and left to drain, the process being completed by smoking it with cold beechwood smoke, which gives it a distinct flavor and a unique texture. This smoked cheese is not just a culinary product but also an expression of tradition and way of life in Vrancea Land.

Visiting Vrancea Land, you will discover not only amazing natural landscapes and a vibrant community but also a world where traditions are kept alive through authentic crafts. From the cheese puppet to the traditional Vrancea folk costume, every aspect of local culture is an invitation to explore and connect to a way of life full of history and significance.

The Legend of Baba Vrâncioaia

Baba Vrâncioaia is an emblematic figure in the history of Vrancea, symbolizing the resistance and courage of its people. This legend conveys the values of courage, determination, and sacrifice, serving as a source of inspiration for all generations. Her story, passed down through words and songs over time, continues to be a guiding light for the community.

According to the legend, it is said that the main villages in the Vrancea area were founded by the seven sons of Tudora Vrâncioaia. They received, as a reward, after the victory in the battle of Războieni on July 26, 1476, the seven mountains of Vrancea. Thus, each of them chose a mountain, near which they later founded the villages: Negrilești, Tulnici, Păulești, Spinești, Bârsești, Nereju, and Năruja.
