Pie on Slate in Apuseni Mountains - Stone Country

In the Stone Country, in the Apuseni Mountains, time has allowed a pause, leaving behind a mosaic of traditions, crafts, and selected dishes, cherished by the Moților Land. In this corner of the world, where nature and culture come together in perfect harmony, you will discover the pies on slate, a culinary pride of the area, along with a varied range of traditional products that enrich the culinary and cultural experience of any visitor.

The journey begins in Arieșeni, a place of tranquility and winters conquered by snow, perfect for winter sports enthusiasts. Then, continuing the journey to Albac, you will discover a resort now recognized as a European Destination of Excellence.

In the village of Bărăști, the slate craftsmen will reveal to you the secrets of green marble, skillfully transformed into slates for baking pies. These slates are not just cooking tools but true symbols of the local culinary tradition.

If you pass through here, you must taste the Plăcintele pe lespede (Pies on Slate). How are they prepared? First and foremost, with love and great skill. Then, with a handful of quality ingredients and a lot of dedication.

The dough is made from flour, yeast, eggs, milk, salt, and a touch of sugar. It is then carefully kneaded and rolled out meticulously on a wooden board. The soul of the pie is the filling, a divine combination of slightly sour and salty cow cheese, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and dill, all mixed and carefully placed on the dough.

The dough embraces this filling, forming a pie that will be baked on heated slates, carefully turned for even baking. When ready, the pies are brushed with sour cream or butter, enveloped in a crispy and fragrant crust. Served warm, alongside milk or wild berry syrups, these pies become not just a dessert but a sensory experience you won't forget.

We invite you to taste the famous pies in the communes of Arieșeni, Gârda de Sus, Scărișoara, Albac, and Horea, where you will also discover other traditional recipes, such as "zama de picioci" or the traditional "mămăliguța" with cheese and sour cream.

On the winding mountain roads, you will find the "Moțului Pantry," where an impressive collection of certified traditional products awaits you, each reflecting the mountainous specificity of the area. From Moților cheese to raspberry and blueberry jam, from dandelion, blueberry, elderflower, spruce bud, and raspberry syrups to pickled mushroom spread, each product is a testament to the natural richness and culinary traditions of the region.

In the Stone Country, every step is a journey into simplicity and beauty, and every taste is a story. We invite you to discover the authenticity and flavor of the Apuseni Mountains, where the mountains, houses, and dishes on the plate speak to you about the charm of the Moților Land.
