Chioar Land and Codru Land - "Maramureș, land with dishes with corn flour”

In the north of Romania, where legends come to life, lies the county of Maramureș, a land of endless traditions and fabulous gastronomy. Steeped in history and shrouded in mystery, this land offers a culinary experience that transcends time and space, inviting you to discover its richness and diversity.

Our journey begins in the vibrant heart of Maramureș, the city of Baia Mare, a mixture of tradition and modernity, the ideal starting point for exploring the four ethnographic areas: Maramureș Land, Lăpuș Land, Chioar Land and Codrul Land. Here, within the five existing museums, an exciting introduction to the colorful Maramures universe awaits you.

Chioar Land, with its picturesque villages and Codrul Land, with its gentle hills, reveal their unique character through wooden churches and deep-rooted traditions. The gastronomy of these regions is defined by the rural life and the customs of the village communities, offering a wide range of authentic culinary preparations.

In Chioar Land, you cannot miss the delicious Placintă creața pie, a pride of the region, with a simple recipe, but full of tradition. To prepare this pie, put flour, water and a pinch of salt in a bowl and mix vigorously until it turns into dough. Then you carefully spread it into a thin layer that you fill with salty cheese and dill. You wrap everything up like a precious gift and fry the pie in a tick-bottomed pan until golden and crispy. You enjoy it with a glass of "grostior", a fat collected from freshly milked milk.

In Codrul Land you will discover the Codreneasca Pie, a traditional dish with a unique taste. For this, the dough is made from flour, water, yeast and a small amount of sugar, which you knead until it becomes elastic and then leave it to rise in peace and quiet. You roll out the dough, fill it with salty cheese and fold it into fine folds. Then you fry it in an oiled pan. The result is a tasty and nutritious pie, perfect to warm you up on a chilly day.

In addition to these pies, Chioar Land reveals its culinary talent with dishes such as stuffed cabbage (sarmalele), chicken soup and peas with milk. These dishes, cooked with local ingredients and lots of love, are a testament to the hospitality and generosity of the people of the area.

Codrul Land, for its part, displays its culinary mastery with polenta layered with greaves, cozonac and homemade cakes, bringing a part of its soul to the table. Pork-based dishes such as sausages and smoked ham are also a staple of the area's traditional cuisine, recalling the times when every household prepared its supplies for the winter.

These traditional dishes can be enjoyed at local gastronomic spots or as part of cultural-culinary experiences, each of which gives you a window into the life and culture of the region. Whether you opt for a meal in a local restaurant or for participating in a cultural-gastronomic event, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the authentic dishes of Maramureș and let yourself be carried away by their stories.

Through this culinary journey, Maramureş not only offers you an unforgettable gastronomic experience, but also invites you to explore the depths of its traditions and culture, opening the door to a land where every meal is a celebration of life and community.
