Traditional households in Rimetea

Visitable
In Colțești, a village surrounded by the beauty of the surrounding nature, traditional houses represent not only stone and wood structures, but true living chronicles of time and local traditions. Here, on the village streets, unfolds a fascinating architectural story, and each house has something unique to tell.

The houses are harmoniously placed along the street, often with wooden fences, and some gates seem to be stories embedded in time.

Houses with earthen ovens tell stories of skilled craftsmen, and those with walls made of wooden beams are testimonies of the 18th-19th centuries. Then, houses built after 1870, with stone walls and facades decorated in eclectic style, with gable roofs and tessellated pediments, are the ones that dominate the landscape of traditional architecture today.

Dare to let your steps wander through the village streets, and your gaze will be captivated by houses that preserve living history. You will surely notice the house at number 51, belonging to a craftsman. It has a generous cellar that probably had a direct exit to the street and served as a commercial space.

Walking along the street, you will discover an atypical L-shaped house, the accumulation of a wealthy family of Reformed priests from the second half of the 19th century. Its imposing volume and harmonious proportions teleport you to another era.

Notable names

At number 56 is the house of Sámuel Brassai, the great Transylvanian scholar of the 19th century. An excellent linguist, scientist, philosopher, critic, mathematician, musician, and last but not least, a pedagogue, Brassai was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences until his death in 1897. The house where he was born, with its warm facade and small windows painted in green and white, is a suggestive example of the area's architecture.

Unique Experiences

A walk through the village can be perfectly complemented by a hike to Colțești Fortress. Built in 1241 to defend against the Tartar invasion, the fortress went through several historical episodes until 1703 when Austrian troops partially destroyed it, leaving some of the surrounding walls and two towers.

In the shadow of the Secuiului Stone and under the watchful eye of the fortress, the houses here offer you a corner of authentic world, soaked in the simplicity of bygone times, patiently awaiting their discovery at a slow pace.
