Let's make a stop in the commune of Mihăileni, Harghita County, in the courtyard of the Biális Manor!
Its history is tied to Francisco Biális, a military man of Italian origin from Genoa, who arrived in this blessed place in the mid-17th century. He and his descendants married members of noble Szekler families, thus consolidating their high social positions and proudly serving the interests of the Szeklers in Ciuc.
On the extensive estate owned by the Biális family, today's manor was built in 1837. The building is a living testimony to the distinct architectural style of the Szekler nobility manors, having served as a residence, town hall, army locker room, post office, and compossessorate headquarters.
While the next page of history is being written, discover the spirit of the past that hovers here in everything.
Brief historical foray
The Biális manor was built in the 18th century in the style of the manors of the Szekler nobility, on a large plot of land, surrounded by outbuildings. It was at the edge of the village, to achieve privacy, prestige and to integrate into the natural environment. Beyond its main role as a residence, the Biális Manor was transformed into the Town Hall, during the Two World Wars it was used as an army dressing room, and closer to the present day it had the role of the headquarters of the post office and the compossessorate office.
Architectural features
In Szekler land, being a small and medium nobility, with no economic power, the noble residences are also modest in size, but preserve architectural styles that become distinctive signs of the noble rank. The manor is an interesting case: although it is a small building, it looks like a representative construction through the reception pavilion and the loggia cut into the facade, an inspiration from the Italian cultured architecture.
The Biális manor thus impresses with its harmonious proportions and the balanced ratio between the simple volume of the building and the high baroque style roof.
Outstanding personalities
The genealogy of the Biális family originates in the person of Francesco Biális, a military man of Italian origin who hails from Genoa. He arrived as a soldier in Transylvania around 1650.
Those from the Biális family married the members of the most noble Szekler families, thus through consanguinity relations they reached high social positions and served the interests of the Szeklers from Ciuc at a high level.
