If you are attracted by the history and civilization of the Dacians, you have the chance to explore one of the important strategic points in their fortification system.
The Dacian fortress at Bănita, called by the locals the Fortress of Eagles, dates back to the time of the Dacian king Burebista, having the role of defending the access to Sarmizegetusa Regia from the south. Its name comes precisely from the steep, almost conical rock on which it was built, with extremely difficult access. Once at the fortress, the dominant position of the place offers a wide, panoramic landscape of the Jiu valley and the Parâng Massif. The effort is rewarded.
And because the fortress is not an easy to reach tourist spot, but a place that needs to be conquered, we recommend that you travel the route only with appropriate equipment and accompanied by people who know the access route.
Architectural features
The Bănita fortification included a series of constructions built for military purposes: enclosure walls, battle platforms, towers, but also a defensive wall built of stone, wood and earth.
The entrance to the fortress was made through a gate with limestone steps, with andesite balustrades. Beyond this were three terraces, which were arranged in steps, in the east-west direction. The first terrace was also the largest.
The wall enclosing the second terrace probably ended with crenellations or wooden parapets at the top.
The third terrace was the acropolis itself, with a dominant position, being surrounded by an enclosure wall, in the shape of a trapezoid.
Unique experiences
Near the Dacian fortress of Bănita is one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in Hunedoara County: the Bolii Cave. Crossed from one end to the other by the Jupâneasa stream, the cave has been designed so that no special equipment is needed to go underground and explore this wonderful construction of nature. In addition, the cave has extraordinary acoustics, classical, rock, folk, choral music concerts and, last but not least, Christmas carol concerts are organized here.
Near Peștera Bolii are the Bănitei Gorges, which impress with a landscape of unique beauty.
