Brief historical foray
The locality of Aiud, in Alba County is documented in 1293. Over time it belonged, as a domain, to the Transylvanian princes. The main architectural element is the complex known as "Aiud Fortress", in fact a fortified church, the enclosure wall with related towers, ecclesiastical buildings and the Princely Palace. Today, the fortress is composed of the old Evangelical chapel and the Reformed Calvinist church, surrounded by a fortified enclosure.
The Evangelical chapel was built in the 19th century on the site of a church that was built in 1333-1334.
The current structure of the fortress is defined by walls made of straight segments, rounded on the western side and provided at the corners with defense towers. Today the walls still reach heights of 10 m, with thicknesses even of about 2 m. At the top you can see the ramparts for firearms, being provided on the inside with a patrol road for guards, almost 1 m wide. Three centuries ago, the fortress was surrounded by a moat full of water, from the Aiudel River, so access was controlled with the help of a mobile bridge.
