Wooden Church of St. George – Dragoslavele

Visitable
After crossing the narrow wooden bridge over the Dâmbovița River, confidently follow the mountain paved road on the left. You will see the wooden cross first. On the right, through the open gate, as an invitation to discovery, the church looms.

It is one of the travelling churches. It bears the charm of the wooden churches of Maramureș and seems to have always been here. You will be surprised to learn that the church at the Dragoslavele Skete was brought from Predeal, where it had been relocated from Borșa Maramureșului. In Predeal, it served as a place of prayer for the young guards initiated by King Carol II.

Currently dedicated to St. Great Martyr George and St. Prophet Elijah the Tishbite, the church was built in 1675-1700.
Through the care of Patriarch Justinian Marina of Romania, the church reached Dragoslavele in 1949, painstakingly rebuilt by Master Dimitrescu as a place of recollection and reception of foreign delegations.

The interior painting is the original, in folk style, partially preserved. The linden wood sculpture of the iconostasis and pews is also special.
Stay for a moment in the church porch and embrace the view of the picturesque Dragosloveni Mountains!

Architectural features

The wooden church at the Dragoslavele Skete immediately stands out due to its architecture, in Maramureș style, with its tall and pointed steeple, which serves as a bell tower.

The church walls are made of wooden beams. The entire construction is placed on a high pedestal, built of stone boulders. The entrance is through a massive wooden door. The church is covered with shingle and the roof has very wide eaves, covering the porch built along the entire length of the southern side of the church.

Story of the place

The origin of the village is attributed to a Dragoslav who came from Hațeg. A royal charter from Matei Basarab mentions the arrival at Dragoslavele of some villagers from Hațeg, who were engaged in searching for gold in the sand of the Dâmbovița River.

An interesting detail is that, at Dragoslavele, Eng. Dimitrie Dima built an electric power plant, which gave the place the status of the first electrified rural settlement in Romania.
