Traditional Households Jurilovca – Sterea Marian Family
At the gate of the Danube Delta is Jurilovca – a place of multiculturalism where the ethnic Russian Lipovan community settled long ago. Fascinating people with their power to resist the times, the Lipovans came to Romanian soil to find shelter. Persecuted for their faith following the religious schism in 17th-century Russia, they settled here, preserving their ancestral customs. They are perhaps one of the reasons why, in Jurilovca, you feel the time differently, because the Lipovans observe Orthodox holidays according to the Julian calendar, which is 14 days behind the Gregorian calendar.
Their stories are inexhaustible and inspire anyone who wants to listen to them!
We assure you that you don't waste time here, because you stay suspended for a while like in a colorful and cheerful photo, and the silence could be sold by the locals as a souvenir.
Sterea Family
Learn about the traditions and history of the settlement here not only from the Lipovan Russians, but also from two photographic artists who chose to move to this community, named Marian and Daniela Sterea. They are the creators of "Lipovenesc", a project that promotes famous fishermen, skilled housewives and their beautiful habits.
You can find them in their wonderful home on 1 Mai street no. 40, where you meet the most diverse animals, from goats, dogs, cats, chickens, ducks to two... cute alpacas, Piciu and Lulu. Get ready for a memorable photo session!
Architectural features
The house was made according to the model of an old cherhanale.
They built a simple house in white with green, having a generous window. The roof is thatched, and the walls were raised from adobe, as they wanted to keep the traditional look of the town unaltered.
Unique experiences
The area is full of surprises, tastes, aromas and stories. And delicacies such as fish borscht, storceag, clams and fish on the stove, prepared according to the traditional recipes of Lipovan Russians, are unique.
But Jurilovca is also special through many other attractions, whether boating, cycling or kayaking, hiking to spectacular places such as the Greco-Roman Fortress Argamum or Cape Doloșman, boat trips to Portița, a picturesque resort located between Lake Golovița and Black Sea.
It is a peaceful place that offers access to both fresh and salt water, a place where the blue is in the most diverse shades and will conquer you immediately.
