Rural site Valea Viilor

Visitable

Once you arrive in Valea Viilor, Sibiu County, let yourself be carried along the streets of the village to discover the "beauty", in all its forms.

If you're an explorer by nature, take in the surroundings of the rural site and see everything it has to offer. Not many people know how it used to be, how old the village is and how the years have passed over the community here. It's a privilege to talk to them!

On the quiet streets of the village, you are greeted by the church, the core of the settlements founded by the Saxon settlers. Imposing like a cathedral, surrounded by defensive walls, housing real religious treasures, the fortified Saxon church in Valea Viilor and the entire rural site have been included in the list of UNESCO monuments.

Local specific architecture, heritage, cultural landscape, all defined by the coexistence, for hundreds of years, between Saxons, Romanians and Hungarians had a decisive role.

Valea Viilor had three main streets, inhabited by Saxons, and one Romanian street. Each Saxon Street had two neighborhoods, and when in need, people always helped each other. Many of the households are living museums where real treasures can be found. The solid houses with massive gates are chained one after the other, giving the impression of a long fortress wall.

You can visit the permanent home set up in the village, as well as the small museum of Saxon culture at the entrance to the churchyard. When you leave, you will take with you the experience of life in the past.

Geographic location

Valea Viilor is located in Târnave Land, in the north of Sibiu County, on a side road that branches off from DN14, at a distance of 15 km from the municipality of Mediaș and 50 km from Sibiu.

Unique experiences

If you want to learn more about the spirituality of the place, make your way to the three churches, two belonging to the Orthodox cult in the Grui neighborhood where the illustrious composer Marțian Negrea was born, as well as the Cetate Evangelical Church. It has a unique style and impressive stature, an example of outstanding architecture.

Over time this church has undergone various modifications and additions built for defensive purposes. Look at the elements that complete the church and admire its shape. The construction of buttresses, vaults and a spiral staircase are sure to catch your eye. The church also houses numerous artistic and furniture elements, such as the baroque altar dated 1779, the baroque canopy from 1746 and the tabernacle.
