Traditional households in Arpașu de Jos commune

Visitable

Arpașu de Jos commune, located at the foot of Făgărași, in the heart of Olt Country, invites you to discover its distinct charm, where local history and architecture create a fascinating journey through time.

One of the defining landmarks of the commune is the Memorial House of Doctor Telea-Bologa in the village of Noul Român, a building with an impressive story, started in the middle of the 19th century. In this place, the passion for tradition harmoniously intertwines with the memories of the outstanding historical figures who passed through its threshold. Transformed into the Memorial Cultural Center "Dr. Gheorghe Telea-Bologa", part of the ASTRA Museum in Sibiu, the house currently hosts various events, offering the opportunity to connect with Romania's cultural and artistic heritage in a unique and memorable way.

The traditional architecture of the area reveals houses arranged with the gable facing the street and chamfered at the top, recalling the influence of Saxon architecture. Materials such as wood, stone, brick and ceramic tiles are combined with light lime-based plasters, giving the buildings a friendly appearance. The wooden joinery, with period-specific profiles, adds an authentic touch to the architecture.

Exploring the streets, you will be captivated by the typical households, revealing authentic traditions with symmetrically arranged living houses and summer kitchens. Generous barns complement these picturesque compositions, offering an authentic glimpse of rural life.

Brief historical foray

The land known as the Făgăraș Land, of which Arpaşu de Jos is also a part, has always been ruled by the Romanians or their ancestors, and later it was under the shield of the lords of the Tara Romaneasca, who in fact descended from this region, across the mountains, starting with the legendary Radu Negru.

Outstanding personalities

Son of the village of Noul Român, an eminent doctor and a perfect man of culture, Telea-Bologa dedicated 42 years to his medical activity, performing over 20,000 surgical interventions and contributing over 30 specialized works published both in the country and abroad. In addition to his medical career, he was a prolific man of culture, publishing over 200 articles in the local and national press.

Unique experiences in the area
Arpaşu de Jos commune is located in an extremely popular tourist area. The most important objectives to visit here are the National Park - Făgăraş Mountains Reserve, the Arpaşel marmot natural reserve and the natural area - Tatar Lake.
