As you pass through the beautiful depression of Țara Hațegului, make a historic stop in Sarmizegetusa! Here, you will discover one of the most important archaeological sites in Romania - Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa.
To ensure visitors have a pleasant and interactive experience, a modern building with museum spaces and annexes will be constructed at the entrance to the site in the near future, as part of a project funded by PNRR and carried out by the Hunedoara County Local Authority.
The new exhibition spaces will appropriately display the most important artifacts from the current museum. Through 3D digitization, you will easily immerse yourself in the fascinating universe of the ancient city. The reconstruction, integrating the preserved original material, of one of the fountains at the entrance to the fort - the Nymphaeum - will be one of the museum's surprise exhibits.
The building will also house facilities for visitors, such as an information point and access to the site, as well as a multifunctional hall for screenings, preparatory lectures for guided tours, or temporary exhibitions.
Priceless Treasures
As part of the museum and monument network of the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization in Deva, the existing museum showcases the pieces discovered at the archaeological site Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa.
In its exhibition spaces, you can see: epigraphic and sculptural monuments, pieces of military equipment, fragments of imperial statues, mosaics, objects made of bronze, bone, ceramics, glass, and coins. All are evidence of an era of great refinement and cultural development.
Through experimental archaeology, passionate researchers have attempted to provide visitors with an image of how these pieces must have looked in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD.
Unique Experiences
Over time, the ruins of the Roman city have provided building material for many buildings in the area. Among these are a series of stone churches in Țara Hațegului. Very close to Sarmizegetusa are the churches of Densuș, Ostrov, and Sântămărie-Orlea. It's worth paying a visit!
Another interesting tourist attraction is Colț Fortress, which inspired the famous French author Jules Verne in writing the novel "The Castle in the Carpathians."
And if you want to learn more about Hatzegopteryx and Balaurul bondoc, visit the Dinosaur Geopark "Țara Hațegului"!
