Traditional households Brodina

Under rehabilitation Visitable
Surrounded by gentle hills, mountain peaks, and picturesque valleys, the locality of Brodina invites you to explore its traditional households that shape a picturesque rural landscape. Set in a natural framework defined by the Suceava Plateau and the Eastern Carpathians, the homes harmoniously intertwine with natural elements, creating an organic dance of rural architecture.

Here, each house preserves the specific imprint of the place: the wooden fences, delicate and transparent, gracefully delineate the properties. Closed wells, with wheels spinning in rhythm with time, pulsate in the midst of the community. Besides houses, you will discover elements of the communal landscape that add charm to the place: cottages, hayfields, orchards, fields laden with the joy of the harvest - all reflecting the hard work of its inhabitants.

The architectural landscape of Southern Bukovina includes almost all types of settlements: clustered or gathered villages, as well as settlements with isolated households. Compact or scattered, the settlements emit a natural atmosphere, where buildings and plots harmonize with the surrounding landscape.

We invite you to be a guest in this part of Bukovina, where history merges with hospitality and natural beauty. Here, households become living stories, and every detail speaks of a community that has preserved its identity.

Brief historical insight

The name of the commune "Brodina" first appeared in 1908 when it was established under this name. It comes from the Slavic word "Brod," which means ford or a place to cross a river "on foot."

Since the spring of 1944, Bukovina has been the first area in Romania where the resistance of the anti-communist army manifested when Soviet troops occupied part of this territory.

Story of the place

An 18th-century decree is found at Putna Monastery, mentioning that the then-abbot, unable to care for eight mountains in northern Bukovina, donated them to people who came from Galicia to manage and care for them. These were the Hutsuls, worthy people also called the mountain people. Elders say that the Hutsuls relied on three trusted friends: the horse, the forest, and the ax. The ax was a symbol of status for the Hutsul man. During the empire, to be able to carry an ax, five crowns were paid.

Unique Experiences

The Paul Torac Ethnographic Collection - A collection of folk objects, arranged in an old house in Brodina by Paul Torac, a young Hutsul fascinated by the history of Brodina. Objects belonging to his grandparents and great-grandparents can be admired, harmoniously displayed in this house, which has been standing since 1918. Here you will discover objects that belonged to the Hutsuls, representative objects of Bukovina, old photographs, fascinating stories, and legends.
