The wooden church dedicated to the "Dormition of Mother of God" in Lăpugiu de Jos is one of the architectural jewels of Hunedoara cultural heritage.
The year 1765 is recorded on the small bell, but also the degraded graphics of the painting in the altar indicate the same year, in which it seems that the church was built. The belltower stands out through the massive gazebo, open on consoles, above which rises to the sky an elegant helmet with a square base.
Although the mural is currently degraded, you can recognize the unmistakable style of the master painter Petru Nicolici Moler.
On the west wall of the pronaos, in the "Second Coming" scene, you will discover the Archangel Michael wearing garb and having the face of Cloșca.
Come to Lăpugiu de Jos, where you will be surprised by other beauties preserved from ancient times, an occasion of joy for the eyes and soul!
The uniqueness of the paintings
The interior painting of the church dates from the first half of the 19th century, being made on a support of oak beams and furs of fir wood on the vaults.
The iconography shows scenes from the Christological cycle, arranged on the register at the base of the vault and separated by colored bands.
On the southern side of the church, you can identify the scenes entitled "Pilate washed their hands of innocent blood", "They prayed to Christ in the garden with hyclenia", as well as "They brought Jesus before the priests". Instead, the south side shows "The Placing of the Crown of Thorns", "Carrying the Cross to Golgotha, of Christ" and "The Resurrection of Christ”.
Unique experiences
If you are staying in this area, you can also visit other places of worship. The hermitage from Ohaba, the church from Teiu or the wooden church from Holdea are also happy for guests.
An interesting objective for natural history enthusiasts is the Fossiliferous Reserve located in Lăpugiu de Sus, where over 1,400 species of fossils have been identified.
