Every step in Buzău County tells a story
Each county of Romania is unique through its local history and legends, as well as through the traditions preserved from long ago.

We invite you to visit all the counties included in Attractive Romania, and for the experience to be complete, we present the stories and customs of each area, so that your trip is unforgettable!

The steps took us this time to Buzau County, where we invite you to take a culinary journey and taste the local recipes proposed in the gastronomic objective Taste the Geopark.

✴️ The Bulgarians from Buzau called themselves "Serbs" to get rid of the Turks. They created babic and Pleșcoi sausages

In addition to the legends, the history of the Land of Buzau is also marked by the presence of a community of Bulgarians who settled here over 300 years ago, known by the locals as... Serbs. There were several waves of Bulgarians who came to the Romanian Lands, especially in Wallachia, between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, when strong uprisings took place against the Ottomans, who were trying to Islamize them as had happened with the Albanians. After the suppression of the uprisings, many fled to neighboring Serbia, which, like the Romanian Principalities, had a special status. However, many soon left here and came to Wallachia, where they declared themselves Serbs, so as not to be persecuted by the Ottomans.

Did you know that, in Romania, the Bulgarian community was so large that after 1877, when our country gained its independence, they proposed to Prince Carol to become King of Romania and Bulgaria?

Practitioners of vegetable growing for as long as they can remember, the Bulgarians have brought here two treasures, a great diversity of plant seeds (vegetables and fruits - not by chance, Buzau has the largest seed bank in Eastern Europe), but also unique culinary dishes (babic, Pleșcoi sausages, soleanca etc.), whose history, but also events where you can taste them, you can discover them in the Attractive Romania app.

✴️ The Land of Luana in Buzău, with Sumerian semantic roots

The recent inclusion of the Buzau Geopark in the UNESCO heritage has revealed a lot of information and legends about Buzau County, but perhaps the most controversial is the one about Luana's Country.

There is talk of a wise king named Luana (perhaps even LuAnu, the father of all gods for the ancient Sumerians), who ruled over a brave and fearless people. Legend has it that this king knew the secrets of the source of life and lived in a fortress whose walls grew incessantly, being illuminated by a star like the sun.

Perhaps beyond the fantastic aspects, some historical questions remain: to which civilization do the drawings with arrowheads and daggers dating from the VI-IV centuries BC. found in some of the caves in the area belong? Or did you know that in Fișici, during the communist regime, verifications were carried out that certified the therapeutic properties of the springs here?

The Land of Buzau is a region rich in mystery and legends, a place of unique natural phenomena and fascinating histories, which have been lost deep in the mists of time. It is not an unknown fact that the Colti area, Buzău, is the place in Romania where amber can still be found in the riverbeds and streams, but the amber found here is unique in the world for its black hue!

Moreover, Stalin himself would have received a reddish-yellow amber pipe, made from an amber found in Colti and stolen by Russian soldiers. We also propose you to discover the village of Pietroasele, famous for the treasure of the Hen
with the Golden Chickens, which was considered the largest treasure of Antiquity until the tomb of Tutankhamun was found, or the Roman Castrum, the largest and most important castrum within a radius of 100 km and one of the last such fortified settlements abandoned by the Romans.
