The story of Nucșoara, an old, important commune that even had its own coat of arms, begins with a legend. It is said that the first inhabitant was a refugee in times of restriction, who settled at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains, in a place that is still called "Sub Nuci".
This is where his name came from. And this is where it all started: the village flourished under the industrious hands of mountain people, used to hard work in the forest, in stone, salt or coal. They built their houses of wood, decorated them with carved embroidery and learned to cover them with shingle of their own hands. When King Ferdinand brought here Italian craftsmen skilled in the use of wood and in hydrographic work, they became attached to the place and to the people of Nucsoara. Many married and stayed here. This is how we now have a "Living Human Treasury" called: Viorica Olivotto. Tanti Viorica is good at spinning wool and warping the fence, but also in the art of weaving and sewing.
If you have arrived in Nucșoara, you must also visit the Elisabeta Rizea Memorial House, the well-known heroine of the anti-communist struggle. And before you leave, don't miss the opportunity to take a photo with the lake in the middle of the village. Not many places you will find something like this!
Local crafts
In the commune of Nucșoara, there has been a tradition for hundreds of years in the art of crafts specific to the forest area, passed down from generation to generation. Since the territory of the commune is covered by forests on an extensive surface, logging and wood processing are part of the tradition of the settlement.
Among the local crafts rooted in the Nucșoara area, we can also list warp weaving, sewing, embroidery, sculpture, to which we can add woodworking and egg painting, which are still practiced by the locals today.
