In the particularly picturesque land, which stretches at the foot of the Mehedinți mountains, you will find the wooden church "Holy Voivodes" of the village of Isverna. Pisanie mentions the year of construction 1836, the main founder being Mihuță Sbârnă from Seliștea Isvernei, being urged by his daughter, named Sara, married to the priest Dumitrașcu from Cloșani. The construction has the shape of a ship, without a spire, the roof being covered with shingles.
The special value of the church is given by the painting of the iconostasis, with floral motifs between the two registers of icons, some in blue and others in red, made in bright colors.
The steps in front of the church are said to have been the children's benches, at the time when the village's first school was housed here.
The porch has carved pillars that ingeniously combine decorative motifs of Romanian folk art. Located not far from Târgu-Jiu and Hobita village of Brâncusi, the little church introduces you to the world of incipient forms of art.
Brief historical foray
The inscription above the entrance door records not only the year the church was built, but also other moments in its history.
The holy place has been rehabilitated several times over time. The first repairs were made in 1856, when the church was plastered and painted.
Twenty-two years later, in 1878, the icons were cleaned, and the painting was retouched by the painter Gheorghe Miloșescu from Comănești, works repeated in 1892 by Gh. S. Ionescu.
