The jewel of Banat, Bogda commune, located in the north of Timiș county, reveals its beauty and history through its picturesque villages, such as Charlottenburg, Altringen, Buzad, Comeat and Sintar. Surrounded by idyllic natural landscapes and located only 40 km from Timișoara, Bogda commune is a perfect place for a getaway for those looking for peace and authenticity.
Charlottenburg, originally populated by German families brought by Charlotte, the wife of the governor of Banat, has gone through several changes over time. From depopulation during the Ottoman occupation, to recolonization with a German population and to the successive change of owners post-1780, the history of the village is a complex weave of events and historical periods that helped shape the community today.
The year 1876 marked an important point in the development of the village, once the construction of the current church by the Sina de Hodos et Kizdia family began. This building, along with other monuments, such as the Irtel Martin mill, demolished during the communist period, are milestones in the story of Charlottenburg.
Charlottenburg, with its symmetrical architectural beauty and rich history, is a window into the Banat's diverse cultural past and a testament to the resilience of its community. By visiting this village, you will have the opportunity to experience a unique part of the Romanian heritage, in a setting that harmoniously combines the past with the present.
Brief historical foray
Charlottenburg, with its history beginning in the 15th century, was initially populated by Slavs and Romanians, and later by Germans. This cultural mosaic is encapsulated in its unique structure, designed by the engineer Carl Samuel Neumann Edler von Bucholt. Its circular plan, with a fountain and mulberry plantation in the center, was meant to create a perfect symmetrical balance, with each house positioned at an equal distance from the other. The construction of the church in 1876 added a significant new element to the architectural landscape of the village.
Architectural features
Charlottenburg stands out not only for its shape, but also for the harmony and symmetry with which each element is placed. This structure, in addition to being a visual spectacle, is also a reflection of the complex history of the village. From the first mention, the initial name being Barita, to the changes of owners and new cultural influences, the village is a living chronicle of the evolution and transformations of the community.
In the heart of the village of Charlottenburg, whether you stop to admire the Cynegetics Museum, the oldest hunting park in Romania, or participate in the wild garlic or donut festival, you will be captivated by the uniqueness of its architecture.
This circular structure, a rarity in the Romanian landscape, is not only a point of attraction, but also a window to the history and traditions of the community. Visiting Charlottenburg, you will experience a mixture of culture, history and hospitality, all combined in a unique architectural setting.
