In the village of Șieu-Măgheruș in the Bistrița area, you have the opportunity to discover a unique castle, surrounded by a diverse dendrological park, with an impressive multitude of tree and flower species: Bethlen Castle in Arcalia. Initially a noble residence built in the 17th-18th centuries, it was transformed around 1880 into a romantic castle, with Moorish and Byzantine architectural elements, by Count Béla Bethlen.
The castle belonged to the Bethlen nobles, a family with significant influence in the history of Transylvania, in the political and social life of the region. János Bethlen, Béla Bethlen, and Balázs Bethlen were some of the family members who made significant contributions to the construction and development of the entire domain, showing special interest in the park and gardens around it, a fact visible even today.
Like many monuments of this type, in 1949 the domain was nationalized and transformed successively into a village shop, an agricultural machinery station, and then into a pioneer camp. From 1963 it was taken over by Babeș-Bolyai University, and for three decades the Arcalia Center for Biological and Geological Research operated here. At present, the Arcalia complex is recently renovated and used as an educational, research, practice, and conference center, thus receiving a new, meaningful life.
The entire area offers a plethora of authentic experiences, combining history, nature, culture, and tradition - an unforgettable journey into the heart of Transylvania.
The Dendrological Park at Arcalia
Built in two stages, the park at Arcalia became famous in Transylvania in the 19th century, being one of the earliest landscape arrangements in the area. The first stage, at the beginning of the century, is attributed to Count János Bethlen and Baroness Zsuzsanna Wesselényi, who transformed it into a true English garden.
Subsequently, in the middle of the century, it was redesigned into the form we see today by Count Béla Bethlen. The park was meticulously designed to be a place of rest and recreation, but also to offer visitors a splendid view of the castle. It covers 16 hectares and is made up of over 150 species of trees and ornamental shrubs, belonging to both native and exotic species.
