UCIMR announces the XXII edition of the ICon Arts Transilvania Festival

The Interpretive Creation Union of Romanian Musicians (UCIMR) announces the 22nd edition of the ICon Arts Transilvania Festival, one of the longest-running festivals dedicated to classical music, jazz and the most effervescent creations in the field of contemporary arts. For 22 days, this year's edition of ICon Arts aims to bring together over 120 participants in the heart of Transylvania, where they will be inspired by the vestiges of the local cultural heritage.

Between July 20 and August 11, villages and towns in Transylvania (Agnita, Avrig, Biertan, Brașov, Copșa Mare, Cund, Daneș, Dealu Frumos, Mediaș, Moșna, Richiș, Rusești, Sibiu) will host exceptional musical events, such as classical , contemporary and jazz music concerts, interdisciplinary artistic residencies and masterclasses for performers.

This year's edition of the ICon Arts Festival proposes an eclectic, multidisciplinary and multicultural program, where the virtuosity of music is intertwined with the picturesque atmosphere of Transylvanian villages and towns and the tasting of traditional dishes, to the delight of the public.

"The 22nd edition of ICon Arts brings a new perspective to the festival, constantly moving towards interdisciplinary collaboration. Music is the central element that connects the local community in surprising ways. Committed to providing the audience with an immersive journey through unique sounds and experiences, the festival explores new artistic territories, combining classical music with contemporary elements, interspersing eras and artistic styles, all held in special locations steeped in history. This year, we are adding a new town to the festival map: Agnita, from Sibiu county, but we are also returning to Brașov, with an extended program." – Sebastian Gheorghiu, Cultural Manager and Member of the UCIMR Board of Directors.
Academy ICon Arts Transylvania

As part of the project, two sessions of the ICon Arts Academy will be held, dedicated to students and pupils who want to improve their technique in composition, solo performance and chamber music, under the guidance of well-known mentors from the music world.
For 9 days, young people will participate in violin, singing, cello, double bass, guitar, percussion and flute masterclasses, led by renowned teachers from Romania, Hungary, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Japan and South Korea.

Between July 20 and 28, there will be masterclasses led by Remus Azoiței (violin), Veronica Anușca and Cristian Hodrea (canto), Laszlo Fenyo (cello), Marc Dorin (double bass), Costin Soare and Dragoș Ilie (guitar), Seung Myeong Oh and Alexandru Anastasiu (percussion).

Between July 28 and August 5, there will be masterclasses led by Ladislau Csendes (violin), Elena Moșuc and Rareș Zaharia (vocals), Andrei Ioniță (cello), Karen Jones (flute), Kuniko Kato (percussion) and Ella Bokor (minicello – cello masterclass intended for children).

A new element is the expansion of the ICon Arts Academy in the city of Brașov, where the piano masterclass returns, but for the first time there will also be a singing masterclass led by Iulia Isaev and a jazz artistic residency, from 4 to 11 August .

ICon Arts Transilvania residences

ICon Arts artistic residencies offer composers and performers from various countries the opportunity to spend 1-2 weeks in Biertan to develop musical or interpretive creations under the guidance of renowned artists.

This year, the residency program hosts the ComPerformer project co-financed by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund - AFCN, in which the selected musicians will work under the mentorship of the violinist Remus Azoiței (Romania/Great Britain), the RTE ConTempo Quartet ensemble (Romania/Ireland) and the composer Sebastian Androne Nakanishi (Romania/Switzerland). Also within the ComPerformer project, in the same period, a photography residency by documentarian Mihai Benea debuts in Biertan, which will then continue in Shkodër in Albania.

The jazz residency in Brașov is organized in partnership with Dublin City University and will include musicians from Romania and Ireland, under the coordination of Romanian guitarist Ciprian Pop.

ICon Arts Transylvania Festival

The efforts of the young musicians during the training programs are aimed at supporting the concerts and recitals scheduled for the months of July and August, in religious edifices, institutions and private properties, willing to host the art. In addition to the students, the events of the ICon Arts Festival will bring together the mentors of the masterclasses of the ICon Arts Academy, as well as new guests of this edition, who will perform in Sibiu and Brașov counties. In addition, the Siberian city of Agnita is added to the map of localities that will host ICon Arts concerts.

Registration at the ICon Arts Academy can be done on the festival's official website by reserving one of the 2 available packages, of 1,000 lei and 3,000 lei, until June 15, 2024, the first including access to training sessions, and the latter offering and half-board accommodation with meals.

In addition to the ICon Arts Festival, this year, UCIMR organizes emblematic events with tradition such as CellEast, The Jazz Cave, the Romanian National Day and New Year's concerts in Sibiu, or the new MuziColine project. More details can be found on the ICon Arts and UCIMR websites.
