About
A weekend full of activities is planned, showcasing the best of the local community in Mândra, with a focus on crafts, traditions, heritage, traditional clothing, and folklore! All of this will take place during the Red Onion Festival on August 24-25.
For this edition as well, the main organizers, the Mândra Municipality and Local Council, with support from local institutions and entrepreneurs, have prepared a diverse program featuring entertainment, revived traditions, sports activities, local products, and distinguished guests. A moment eagerly anticipated by everyone will surely be the conference “We Cannot Grow Without Roots,” presented by Father Constantin Necula on the first day of the event.
Here is the program for the 2024 edition of the Red Onion Festival:
SATURDAY, AUGUST 24
- 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Outdoor Sports - The “Red Onion” Cup in football, Mândra 2024, between village teams from the commune and judo demonstrations - on the Field, free entry.
- 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Swimming in Oancia’s Garden - pool party - free entry.
- 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM: We Cannot Grow Without Roots - conference with Father Constantin Necula - at Cruce-n Deal, free entry.
- 9:00 PM - 12:00 AM: Dancing Tea - board games (rummy, chess, backgammon, Ludo, etc.) and a retro music party from the '80s with DJ Tibi Dima - at Garaj30, free entry.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 25
- 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Liturgy in Traditional Costume - at the historic Holy Trinity Church in Mândra.
- 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM: Shouting and Yelling Duel between several communities from Țara Făgărașului and Maramureș. Special guests: Mioara Marinca, Viorica Cerbu, and the Asociația Rădăcinilor Străbune from Călinești along with the Asociația “IA Călătoare,” and brunch with homemade pies, made by the village women - at Cruce-n Deal, free entry.

2:00 PM - 7:00 PM: OPEN DOORS IN THE VILLAGE. You are invited to a memorable walk through the village, where you will find several open doors to courtyards hosting various cultural activities:
- At the Library, you will meet children and lace makers.
- At Garaj30, you can view a pop-up collection of objects and local stories from communism.
- At Barbu’s yard, you can eat bean soup with onions.
- At the Traditional Homestead, a tasting of bacon with onions and homemade bread is prepared, plus a small fair of local products.
- At the Holy Trinity Church, you will discover a painting from 1821, created by the famous Sava Zugravul and restored under the guidance of painter Ștefan Câlția, plus an exhibition of old photographs in the church hall, part of the “Community Memory” digital archiving project.
- From the Mândra Chic contemporary dowry workshop, you can take home at least one authentic local souvenir.
- At the Museum of Cloth and Stories, you can see a contemporary installation about the Spindle that has traveled over 1 million km worldwide, and you can write, color, or print with plants, postcards with stories (in collaboration with “Zestre cu poveste”).
- At Râpă, the children of the village will have a lemonade stand.
- At Comșa’s, you can swim in the pool.
- 2:00 PM - 9:00 PM: The Big Fair (music at the stage near the Troiță, street food, etc.)
Invited Artists, in order of stage appearance: Ianis Șerban, Alesia Șoroagă, Elena Pirău and Laurențiu Begu, Larisa Bera, Daria and Rebeca Curea, Mioara Marinca, Viorica Cerbu, Mioara Greavu, Georgiana Pătrunjel, Elena Curticăpean, Carmina Tatomir, Flaviu Florea, the Folklore Ensemble Junii Becleanului, Diana Gribincea, Sorin Urdea, Story Teller Orchestra, Bogdan Georgescu and Analog Orchestra, Ionuț Langa, George Rotaru.
From Friday evening until Monday morning, the gates at Oancia’s Garden are open, with camping and swimming available. The Red Onion Festival is financially supported by the Brașov County Council with the amount of 30,000 lei, as part of the 2024 Brașov County budget program for non-refundable financing of cultural projects - the component intended for public law beneficiaries.
